glass

not all glass is created equal.  below is a list of what types of glass are redeemable, recyclable, et which types should be placed in the trash.
redeemble glass (CA/c=california)
when you buy certain beverages, you pay a redemption value (rv) deposit.  look for "(CA) crv" or "ca cash refund" on the containers at a local redemption centre et you'll get your money back.  they can also be recycled in your regular recycling cart for free.
recyclable glass
non-(c)rv glass containers, such as food jars, sauce bottles, baby food containers, wine bottles, and other glass containers can be recycled in your recycling cart.  these are not redeemable for cash because a (c)rv deposit was not charged when the items were purchased.
non-recyclable glass
drinking glasses, glass dishes, glass baking pans, windows, picture frame glass et other forms of glass are not recyclable et must be placed in the trash.

wood

lumber, pallets, crating, fencing, trim blocks, plywood, particleboard, decking et other clean wood products can be recycled.
PCP treated wood, pressure treated wood et railroad ties contain hazardous chemicals et cannot be disposed of with regular trash.  the county landfill accepts treated wood for special disposal; small lengths of 5 foot or less are preferred.  large quantities are accepted, however restrictions apply to commercial sized materials.

RX

what should you do with expired et unused prescriptions et medications (a.k.a. pharmaceuticals)?

flushing pharmaceuticals down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can end up polluting the environment et exposing humans, plants et animals to harmful chemicals et hormones.

ask the your local county.

by federal law, all controlled substances (such as vicodin, morphine, codeine, etc.) can only be handled by law enforcement.  if you have any of these medications, you can bring them to a police station for disposal.

yard materials

most communities in county have access to yard material collection. contact your local recycling program for information on how to recycle your yard materials.

compost it!  composting is nature' s way of recycling plant materials into a nutrient-rich soil supplement.  composing can require very little work et be odor et rodent free with proper techniques.

if you'd like to see your christmas tree remain "green" even after the holiday season, you can have it recycled!  check your local recycling program for curbside collection options for your christmas tree.  the county central landfill also accepts christmas trees for recycling.

light bulbs

incandescent bulbs
when they are burned out or broken, place in the trash.  there are no recycling options for these bulbs.

neon bulbs
these can be considered hazardous waste et should not be thrown in the trash.  bring old neon bulbs et signs to a household hazardous waste drop-off day.

halogen bulbs
when they are burned out or broken, place in the trash.  there are no recycling options for these bulbs

fluorescent bulbs et tubes
these bulbs contain mercury et are illegal to throw in the trash.

led bulbs
these high efficiency bulbs do not contain any hazardous materials.  when they are burned out ou
broken, place in the trash.  there are no recycling options for these bulbs.

christmas lights
these can be recycled with electronics.

kitchen scraps

got food scraps?  compost it!  it's (it is) nature's way of recycling.  turn these items into rich soil amendment by simply burying them in your garden:

🍇fruit trimmings           🍚rice                            🍝pasta         ☕️coffee filllters
🍅vegetable trimmings   ☕️coffee grounds          ☕️tea bags    🍞bread

here' how:
1.  dig a hole ou trench about 12 inches deep.
2.  add 2-3 inches of food scraps to the hole.
3.  chop et mix the scraps into the soil, then cover the food scraps with at least 8 inches of soil,
      to keep pests out.
4.  check occasionally for signs of digging by rodents, dogs ou other pests.

foood scraps may take 1-6 months to decompose completely depending on the season, moisture,
soil et type of food scraps buried.  do not bury more food scraps in the same place until the first
scraps have been fully composted.

compost workshops et compost bin rebates may be available in your area. contact your local
recycling program for details.
